New research has revealed that Amazon is the leading online retailer in the UK.

Figures from IMRG and Hitwise have revealed that Amazon is the UK's leading online retailer.

In figures which may highlight the sites responsible for a major level of parcel delivery activity in the UK, it was revealed that Argos and Play.com completed the top three.

Some of the fastest climbing retailers include Asos and Marks & Spencer, with the clothing sector emerging as the fastest growing online shopping market.

James Roper, chief executive officer of IMRG, said £50 billion of online sales are "at stake" this year.

He added: "Cross-border trading is the latest online shopping trend that is taking off, as UK retailers seek to exploit the weak pound's attractiveness to overseas shoppers."

Don Davis, editor of website Internet Retailer, recently claimed that the recession could boost the number of web users choosing to buy products online, as people look for good value.
