The giants of online shopping, eBay and Amazon, have both forecast when they expect to hit their peak volume of pre-Christmas traffic.

And, surprise, surprise, they're both pinpointing different days.

While eBay UK is expecting its busiest trading day to be Sunday December 4 – a day it is calling 'Super Sunday', as we reported yesterday – bosses at the UK arm of Amazon say that, based on their own previous experience, its busiest pre-Christmas day is expected to be Monday December 5.

Christopher North, Amazon.co.uk's managing director, said that the corresponding Monday last year saw the site process orders for 2.3million items.

He too, said that the increasing use of mobile devices was clearly evident, and this was a big reason why Mondays, rather than weekends, were now considered the key online shopping days.

"But," he added, "every day of that week will see high sales as more and more people have immediate access to shop online."
